Follow the statistics, your traffic will improve.

I have a couple of websites, blogs, squidoo lenses, hubs and so on, and like everybody else I try hard to drive traffic to them.
Because the Internet trends, patterns, Web 2.0 applications, engine algorithms are changing so rapidly, we cannot relay on 2-year ago info.
I need to know what is working NOW, and what I have to change from my old patterns.
For websites.
I have started a habit to find out info about my traffic . I spend 10-15 min per day looking to the statistics on my cPanel.
When I was looking for a host for me, I chose HostGator as they had Fantastico utility. It was an excellent choice. In addition to Fantastico, they have a big variety of other utilities, tutorials, statistics tools and an excellent live support. You will be surprised how much you can learn just looking at the statistics.
Example:
If somebody asks me what page on my main website attracts the largest number of visitors, I couldn’t guess, as it is:- The most simplistic page possible
- The page contains only 2 pictures and 4 links
- I created the page as a practice for a script I bought one and a half year ago
- It has never been updated since creation and
- I almost forgot about it.
This is it:
http://www.mc-ebay-resources.com/MyVideos.htmlIt is true that the 2 links are for sites which are collections of videos I created with the script:
- One is collecting all the videos created for eBay
- The other is collecting all the videos created for Studio Art Glass
It is also true that:
- My Squidoo lens for Art Glass S. Fellerman is ranked #552 in Alexa (last time I checked) as squidoo is ranked #552
- My eBay auction site is not ranked at all in Alexa and Google (this is the other mystery of Google search engine algorithms)
But MyVideo.html page produces the most traffic possible and NOW I know WHY!
It is because it has 2 links to pages that are collections of videos which are dynamically allocated, each time a new Video is added or deleted. But don’t forget my page ( MyVideo.html) hasn’t changed in one year and a half, and continues to inherit the visibility, the traffic from the video collection sites.
Isn’t this intriguing and useful to know? This is actually the proof that the backlinks to pages with high volume of traffic can benefit you for your own ranking.
And I found this looking at my statistics in cPanel.
For lenses, hubs, twitter etc.
For Web 2.0 applications are easier to determine if you have good traffic or not, as you can see the participation of other people.Example – you can see that one twitter has 2,000 followers and the other has just 200, or a lens is ranked well and has a lot of comments whereas others are not, and so on.
For Web 2.0 applications you also have a lot of widgets which are dynamically allocated, and now you can use some widgets in websites as well.
Note: I think I am an affiliate for the script creating a site that collects all the existing videos created for a specific key. I never used that affiliation; I will look it over, and let you know.
As always, you are welcome to leave your comments here on the blog.
Until next time, all the best
